Bojan Salaj
Interiors III
Salaj initiated his Interiors cycle four years ago, and to date has made photographic records of a number of cultural, religious and state institutions; it is a work in progress encompassing conceptual projects and complex visual studies. In terms of form, Salaj preserves the consistent characteristics of his previous series: large dimension colour photographs produced using large-format analogue cameras and even a camera obscura.
In Interiors III, Salaj is once again interested in the symbolic and semantic functions of his subject matter, reflecting upon the significance of institutions, as well as their historical, national and cultural functions. This particular series is composed of five photographs, which at first sight present scenes from nature – a forest, a waterfall, a lake, a valley and the sea. Where do these scenes come from and why? How can they be related to the title Interiors? In the artist’s words, it is “a selection of views on Slovene landscape that has been written in the collective unconscious …” The concentrated layers of meaning provoke more attentive observation and reflection.
