Tanja Verlak

Tanja Verlak received her doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London. Her work is based on the gestures of observation and often explores the phenomenon of the magical in photography. Following research degrees at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi and the Akademie múzických umění in Prague, Verlak also received the prestigious Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2021 and carried her research at the Museum of Contemporary Photography – MoCP and Columbia College Chicago.

Verlak is a recipient of the Zois Scholarship, a national grant given to exceptional students in sciences and arts. She was a guest artist at the International Center of Photography – ICP in New York, the British School at Rome in Rome and St. John’s University in New York.

She is a double recipient of The Photography of the Year Award and exhibits internationally (Paris Photo, AIPAD New York, Texas Contemporary Art Fair, Tate Modern (Offprint), GoEun Museum of Photography, Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, UGM). Her works are part of international art collections and were recently auctioned by Sotheby’s.

Verlak is currently developing a photobook based on optical illusion.
