Aleš Gregorič
Born on 25 August 1966 in Ljubljana where he has lived and created since the age of 25. He attended high school in Ljubljana to obtain a qualification as a Machinery Technician. In addition, he obtained qualification in Carpentry and Camera Operator certificate from the National Radio and Television. During the war in Slovenia he had his studio for Visual Communication and he actively covered the conflict in the region of Kocevje and Ribnica. Immediately after the ten-day war in Slovenia he left for Ljubljana and took up various jobs for a short period of time until he was employed by the Faculty of Chemistry as a Technical Assistant. He seriously tackled photography rather late, in his 30’s, when he purchased a middle format camera from his brother who went to London for photography specialisation. He created his first range of black & white photographs learning how to search, correctly set up and capture light to produce coherent and sound photography with expressive power. In 1997 he received a reward at the International Photography Exhibition in Rovinj, Croatia and he also obtained the Best Photograph of the Year Award at the national competition. In 1998 he received the third, in 2000 the second and in 2004 the first prize for his photography. Even though black & white photography presented a challenge to Gregoric, it has been replaced with colour photography in recent years. In a way, this is further development of his quest as a photographer as he has predominantly been focusing on composition settings and bigger formats in order to attain the real substance of the entirety.
