Trip to Mars
I was 24 when I first went to Sicily. It was January, the weather in the south of Italy left much to be desired – moisture and the strong sirocco wind intruded into homes, penetrated the skin, it seemed like my entire surroundings were slowly rotting.
I spent the evenings drinking wine on the cold beach. The night I met Giuseppe was no different from the previous ones … until he gestured me to come to his table.
The table to which I was invited was full of people. The man who called me did not look like a Sicilian. Well-built, handsome, about sixty years old, a gentleman with noble features and a calm, wise gaze. A penetrating gaze.
Giuseppe Fontana is free since less than a year ago. Accused of two murders, trafficking and smuggling of arms and drugs, money laundering, being part of a criminal organization, he was to spend 28 years behind bars. He served 18.
Giuseppe is called the number two of Cosa Nostra, which is why he was transferred from prison to prison 256 times during the course of his sentence. In this way, the prison system tried to prevent the creation of contact and crime groups within specific institutions …
Fontana was captured in 1994 during Operation Eden. Italian, American and Mexican anti organized crime special forces arrested 134 mafiosi.
Now, after leaving the prison, Giuseppe engages in the struggle to restore Sicily’s independence.
Number one of Cosa Nostra, in hiding since 24 years ago, the most wanted criminal in Italy, is his best friend.
