Alen Ožbolt
Alen Ožbolt (1966, Slovenia) works across various media of visual art, using a multiplicity of techniques. He graduated from bo fine Art Academy in Zagreb and in Fine Art Academy in Ljubljana and attended the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) as a visiting artist. He was a key member of the art group VSSD (Painter do You Know Your Duty) from 1984-1995, which exhibited at the Venice Biennial twice during the 1990s. Since 1996 he has been working independently. In 2007 he started teaching Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where he lives and works.
Ožbolt’s artistic endeavors stem from “spatial painting”, which is dominated by the three-dimensionality and the ambience of the medium of painting. Pertaining to his signature artistic style, he integrates the components of time and space of the viewer into his works. Photography has never been the main medium of Ožbolt’s artistic expression, nevertheless, it always plays a key role in his work. His work often explores the complex relationship between an artwork and its image as a photograph, as well as in the creation of new meanings of photography, stemming from its subjectivity.
