A Sea of Being is the title of a recently published photo book on Butoh, an avant-garde performance art in postwar Japan and the result of an artistic collaboration with the dancer Mirjam Morad and the photographer Laurent Ziegler. Both artists explore the outer landscape with all their senses, yearn for modes to connect with the inner self, with the image as the key agent in this exchange. Mirjam and Laurent search for ways of re-living, re-embodying memory that is within the boundaries of perception.
Photon Gallery presents the photo book to the public on May 23, 2017, 7 pm. At that occasion Mirjam Morad performs in a landscape structure designed and applied to the gallery space by Laurent Ziegler.
Laurent Ziegler focuses on photography, installation and performative work. He studied Political Science and completed educational programs in contemporary dance and film. His work is internationally represented in group and solo exhibitions. Laurent has several years of experience in teaching visual arts and contemporary dance. He believes that everything we experience is connected with us and our awareness of it, that sensitivity defines our place in this world.
Mirjam Morad is a Vienna based performer, lecturer and poet with strong ties to Kazuo Ohno, one of the leading figures and founders of Butoh. Mirjam’s approach to Butoh is based on years of meticulous research and exploration. Her work is closely connected to and inspired by nature and the understanding of the world as one single, breathing entity. She studied classical ballet, contemporary dance as well as Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology and Kabbala.
